The Combating Autism Act of 2006

The Fuzz Foundation has been working closely with other major advocacy groups on forming the Combating Autism Act of 2006. While still in negotiation, the bill has a potential to bring over $900 million for autism research and educational services.

S. 843 passed the Senate earlier this year by unanimous consent. That version included funding for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to conduct research in environmental links to the autism epidemic.

Currently in the House, it is being negotiated by the House Energy & Commerce Committee, headed by Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX). While in intense negotiations with major autism groups, Mr. Barton has withheld the bill for passage to the Floor due to an objection to language identifying environmental research.

The autism community is faced with a difficult decision at this point. $900 million in research funding is on the table in Washington. Yet, it is believe that without some sort of specification for environmental research, the funding will not be utilized in the best interest of autistic children.

The Fuzz Foundation's position is that nearly a billion dollars in funding for a disorder-specific bill is difficult to walk away from. Whether the environmental language is passed as law or not, the community still needs to advocate for the wisest appropriation of funds to get the proper research completed in a broad-based, unbiased, & peer-reviewed manner.

While it is possible to get S.843 passed under the new Democratic Congress, there are no guarantees. This is our preferred approach, but we continue to support the bill while it is on the table.
